The machine sits at the core of the strategy of modernity of Italian futurism, driving the international vocation of futurismo after the First World War. This introductory chapter explores the conceptual underpinnings of futurismo, e.g. simultaneity and dynamism, and their contribution to the construction of a machine culture in the postwar years. It further outlines the political strategy of postwar futurism in tandem with the industrial policy of Fascism, or in opposition to it as the case may be. The introduction maps a broad field, establishing the premises, boundaries and overlaps of the research herein.
