This chapter examines the political and security situation outside of Belfast and Derry before the introduction of internment. This localised study demonstrates that the political and security situation in the areas outside of the two main urban centres was quite different. It is demonstrated the evolution of the conflict across Northern Ireland was more gradual and less inevitable than has been previously highlighted.
