Gerry Fitt and the SDLP

The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) was inaugurated on 21 August 1970 amidst a media furore and into a nationalist political vacuum in Northern Ireland. Tracing the true moment of its conception, however, is decidedly obscure, and its origins remain somewhat ambiguous. Using previously unpublished material from party and private papers, this chapter examines the founding aims of the SDLP and questions them in light of the party’s first year in parliamentary opposition.
