This chapter discusses Cantet’s lesser known early films, Tous à la manif, Jeux de plage and Les Sanguinaires, noting how they show Cantet’s method(s) already at work and rehearse situations that will be more fully developed in the later works. It shows how the oedipal situations and male melodramas to be found in the films are penetrated by broader social tensions, Cantet always using the interpersonal to dramatize and dissect broader dynamics. It also discusses the utopian dimension of the films and notably their exploration of collective mobilisation and radical social reinvention, and the obstacles to both.

Keywords:   Male melodrama, utopia
