Chapter 2 is intended to give the reader the contextual information concerning the selection of specific Romanian and Ukrainian metal sub-sectors for carrying out a study of union strategies in hostile contexts. The chapter also presents an overview of key developments for labor in Romania and Ukraine throughout transformation, in order to familiarize the reader with the political and economic context of labor representation in the two post-communist countries.
