The chapter reviews the findings and discussion of the book and summarises the multifaceted roles of the councillor and the expectations on their office. It also summarises the debate in the book about the nature of the office of councillor as a representative, decision-maker and governor of a locality and the tensions inherent in those features that councillors must reconcile. The chapter links the importance of the political and social status of councillors to the structural and procedural changes designed to enhance the ability of councillors to deal with challenges they face. The chapter sets out the latest stage in the contemporary debate about the role of local government and the councillorand concludes by r4ecognising the contribution councillors make to the overall governing framework of the nation.
