The chapter explores the relationship between councillors’ official council duties and responsibilities and the private and social aspects of their non-council lives. It examines the strategies councillors devise to deal with the demands and pressures of being a councillor and with the intrusions into other facets of their lives from the office they hold. It also considers the different strategies developed by councillors in office and manual occupations to deal with the interference being a councillor has with being employed, self, full, or part-time. The chapter explores the day-to-day experiences of being a councillor and assess the demands that are made on councillors by the very nature of the proximity they have with those they represent and govern.
