Richard Wainwright, the Liberals and Liberal Democrats

Manchester University Press

This chapter focuses on Richard Wainwright's experience at Cambridge University. When Wainwright came to Cambridge in the autumn of 1936, he immediately joined the Liberal Club, thereby beginning a commitment he was to maintain for over fifty years until the Party's merger with the Socialist Democratic Party (SDP), and a further fifteen with the Liberal Democrats. He wrote for The New Radical and became the club's president in his final year. He also became a member of the Eighty Club, a dining club through which the Liberal Party nationally sought to recruit aspirant political leaders. This chapter highlights Wainwright's opposition to the commonly held view during this time that the Liberal Party was finished.
