The history of the Jews in Europe was the focus of Jacob Talmon's research for more than forty years (1939–1980). The conflicting attitudes of European Jews; their seclusion and integration which neither brought tranquillity to them; Jews as makers of history or as victims; on the link between Jews, Messianism and revolutionary movements and ideologies; on the rise of nationalism and of anti-Semitism - - these topics and others are discussed in this chapter. Talmon connects between the issues mentioned here and the involvement of Jews in the academic world.
