This chapter looks at the events that led to the formation of the United Company and the creation of a theatrical monopoly of theatre in London which was to last for thirteen years. By pursuing a bottom-up approach to the power shifts in the company and considering afresh the position of the players and their response to changes in company practice, the actress can be seen to occupy a visible presence and emerging power in the economics of the playhouse.
